Stop Making Resolutions! Create Goals to Truly Succeed in 2019.

The end of December is a time for reflection on all we've achieved this past year, as well as noticing all the stuff we feel we need to stop doing. This is when we set all these resolutions for things we want to stop doing or change in the coming year. Here's the thing - resolutions are crap.

Seriously. Stop making resolutions.

We all make decisions about what we want to release in the New Year by saying things like - I am going to start eating healthier, or I'm going to go to the gym in the new year. The thing about resolutions is that its an all or nothing kind of event. Did you know that 80 percent of people have failed to achieve their resolution by February? This is because there is no grey area, there is no measurement or time frame.

For example - a resolution sounds like:

"I'm going to give up drinking during the week."

A goal would sound like this:

To not drink alcohol on Monday - Thursday from January through March 31st. and instead replace it by drinking tea or water.

Do you see the difference in the two statements? The first is too generic and not measurable. The goal is deliberate, thoughtful and filled with intention. You have also set up an alternative to what you will drink instead of alcohol. It also sets a time frame, so you know you are focused on achieving it until the end of March. This makes it feel more achievable and not so overwhelming. You can then revisit your goal at the end of March to see if you want to continue this goal, or adapt it to better suit where you are at the end of March.

I urge you to stop making blanket resolution statements, and instead sit down and write down what you truly want to achieve in the New Year. Figure out why you want to achieve it. By knowing WHY you want to achieve the goal, it also sets the intention and makes you more motivated to achieve it.

Once you know where you want to go, set your goals up incrementally. Don't set a huge resolution goal of losing 50 pounds by December, without also creating incremental goals to figure out how you are going to get there. Remember, baby steps will get you where you want to go better than trying to sprint and giving up before you even reach the halfway point.

This year, instead of setting blanket statements of resolutions you likely won't achieve, set goals intentionally with what you want to achieve. Putting your goals as an achievement, positive based experience, you are more likely to pay attention to the benefits of successes, rather than being focused on the negative, what you have to 'give up' which often leads us towards failure.

Stay positive, stay motivated and create a year filled with success!
