Goal Setting

Easy-Peasy Lemon-Squeezy

You know what makes goals feel so far away and difficult to achieve?  You start with this grand idea, maybe it’s losing 20lbs or maybe it’s writing a novel.  But after a day of two without eating bread or deleting more words than you actually use in your document, you lose hope.  Feel like, nope – there is no way I am ever going to accomplish this!

Frustration and will power are two of the most difficult things to overcome when trying to achieve your goals.  So, this week, I urge you to try breaking down those seemingly huge unattainable tasks into one easy itty bitty daily goal.  Make it something that you would find ridiculous to not be able to do every day.  Something so silly, you’d feel embarrassed to tell your friend you didn’t do that morning.  Something that there isn’t an excuse in the world to make you not be able to achieve it.

If you want to lose 20 lbs, make a ridiculously easy to achieve DAILY goal.  Something like, for today, I won’t eat toast with my eggs, or for me, I will replace my daily coffee sugar and cream bomb, with tea.  If it’s exercising and you need to get yourself off that couch.  Make the goal of doing ten push-ups and ten sit ups EVERY day.

When you wake up and feel exhausted because your child was up all night with the flu or you have a crazy busy day at the office and don’t have time to get to the gym, you have your simple goal.  Then do it.  This removes the feeling of guilt over not being able to get to the gym and do the hour long run on the treadmill or yoga class, but it IS getting your body moving.  On the days you feel at the top of your game, ready to take on any challenge and get to the gym for two hours – those are the super stretch goals you will give yourself huge high fives for doing.  However, on those days when you are in a negative head space, rely on those easily achievable goals to get you through the day.

Removing guilt and the feeling of worthlessness over not achieving a goal will make the overall goal not feel so unattainable.  It also won't allow you to easily self-sabotage - pushing you to wait until Monday or some other day to restart your diet, etc.  Once you feel like you’ve mastered that easy goal, make a new one – just as achievable.  Instead of writing just two pages a day towards your novel, write three.  Here’s the thing – you actually HAVE to use your will power to do them.

Give it a whirl – get up tomorrow and no matter how you are feeling write those three pages, do those ten push-ups, drink the tea instead of the coffee.   Try it for a week and see how it goes.
